I have an adorable patterdale terrier dog aged 10 months old. I got him when
he was 18 weeks and up to then he was either outside or left in the kitchen
on newspaper. I bought a crate /cage when he first came home and he uses
this as his sleep area. It is open during the day for him to go about the
house and he is locked in at night or when I go out anywhere. It has taken
me a long time to get him to understand to go out to toilet. I'm still have
two problems however. He never askes to go out and if I dont catch him will
go behind the door and even if I let him outside and he goes when I come to
put him in his cage he will cock his leg and go through the bars. Can anyone
give me any ideas as to how I can help him get over this problem. He is
bright and is great company.

Hi Cristina,
Dogs work very well with lots of praise.
I would take him in the garden and close the door behind him until he goes .
When he goes in the garden always praise.
If you feel he is well behaved enough without a cage , I would put it away
and replace it with a bed.
If he goes to the back door and goes to the toilet , then he is asking in
his own way.
You just need to watch for that for a while, and let him out quickly.
You will be surprised how fast he will learn.
Hope this helps you.
Good luck
Pat
