Hairy retriever

Our golden retriever is driving my wife mad with all the hair she casts.
Wife is seriously threatening to give the dog a haircut or at least a bit of
a trim.
Can you do this to such a dog?
I know that the dog wont mind even if she does look a bit odd for a while.

Shedding comes with the dog - live with it! Daily grooming should put
a significant proportion in the bin though. Even if wife did trim the
dog's coat, the only difference would be that some of the hairs shed
would be a little shorter, there wouldn't be any less!
