Dogs watching TV

Don't know if anyone monitors this group any longer, but something has been
puzzling me for sometime now.

Over Xmas, I was away, and watched "One Man And His Dog" on one of those new
LCD(?) televisions. My dog, a border collie, couldn't have cared a fig, but
just got on with her own thing while it was on. This is unusual, because
anything "animally" normally has her complete attention, but not this time.

Back home now, and that program was on the DVD recorder (in case I missed
it), and I decided to watch it again. This time the stupid animal was
mesmerised, and sat there watching the whole thing avidly, following the
movements of the dogs across the screen as if she was there with them.

My TV is an old widescreen CRT set, so:- can dogs see the picture on these
new fangled screens, or was she just being her normal stubborn self while we
were away?

Sometimes my Lab/collie cross rescue dog will appear to be watching
the TV. He never watches it with what you could call excited
enthusiasm, but is much more attentive to the sounds from the TV, as
he is also with the hifi system playing. So I would not be surprised
if the picture without quality sound is less interesting to a dog than
lifelike sound without a picture! The sound of a doorbell or
telephone ringing on the TV or radio gets a similar reaction to the
real thing!
