Our 2 border collie pups are about 5 months old. They seem to love eating
the embers and bits of coal that fall out from the fire and from the
scuttle. I'm wondering if this is likely to do them any harm and if maybe
they are suffering from some sort of vitamin deficiency?

At the moment they have tinned puppy food for breakfast and tea and dried
puppy food available all the time.

Cheers Julian.

No harm in a bit of ash now and again. In fact, it is a staple part of many
of the dried food mixes you can buy. What I feed my collie lists 5% ash in
its ingredients. On top of that, she also enjoys a good munch on the shingle
above the drains in the garden, so I wouldn't worry too much. Like anything
else, best in moderation, so don't let them take too much of it.
